Images from Scaf le Phoque (Scaf the Seal, 1936) by Rojan, aka Russian illustrator Feodor Rojankovsky (1891–1970).

Rojankovsky was responsible for Caldecott Medal winner Frog Went A-Courtin' (in print; see samples in this previous post) and over a hundred more children's books.

Living in Paris in the 1920s and 30s, Rojankovsky also regularly provided erotic drawings for books by Raymond Radiguet and Pierre Louys, and for the anonymous (and famous) Paris Spring.

I'm pretty sure I got these images from Chris Mullen's Full Table, one of the best sites on the web to learn about illustration. Visit them for more Rojan.

Update: I remembered where I found these scans: At the blog Chaudron, where you will find many wonderful posts of haunting imagery.
